This document contains important information about Macintosh Easy Open that did not make it into the documentation.
Topics covered are:
• Application Reference Document
• Last minute compatibility issues
• An up-to-date bug fix list
Please note: Macintosh Easy Open is now shipped on a 1.4MB floppy diskette instead of the 800K one mentioned in the documentation.
The Application Reference Document (provided on this diskette) is a “prestuffed” database of ‘kind’ resources. There are almost 200 applications entries - covering many of the most popular applications. If you drag install it onto your system (and Macintosh Easy Open is running), your system will “learn” how to describe documents for applications you don’t have, as well as better describe the ones you do.
If you are a translation system developer, it is strongly recommended, that you integrate the ‘kind’ resources inside that document into your extension. If you do that, then the user, when you distribute your extension, will also get the benefit of those kinds.
The following is the latest compatibility information available on Macintosh Easy Open:
• Macintosh AV Computers (660AV, 840AV, etc.)
Macintosh Easy Open requires System Enabler 088 version 1.0.1 or newer OR Finder 7.1.1 or newer if you want translation support in the Finder. A copy of the System Enabler can be found in the Documentation folder on this diskette.
• It is NOT recommended to use Macintosh Easy Open with the following CPU/System Software configuration:
>> Macintosh cx, Macintosh IIx, Macintosh SE/30, Macintosh II w/ a PMMU and
>> System 7.0 (without Tune Up) and
>> VM turned on
If your machine matches the configuration above, we strongly recommend upgrading your System by adding System 7 Tune Up or System 7.1 prior to using Macintosh Easy Open.
• Super Boomerang 4.0.1 or earlier
Please upgrade your Super Boomerang to version 4.0.1p or later in order have it work with Macintosh Easy Open. The version is available as a patch to 4.0.1 and is available on many BBS’s.
• Can’t Open a document even though you have the application?
Try rebuilding your desktop by restarting and holding down the option and command keys. A conflict can occur with Macintosh Easy Open when installing an application with an installer program.
It is recommended that all Macintosh Easy Open users upgrade to 1.0.4.
• Macintosh Easy Open 1.0.4
>> Enables AV Macintosh support for pre 7.1.1 Finder’s (System Enabler 088 added to Macintosh Easy Open diskette).
>> Fixed a problem where scrap translation could fail if a clipboard was written to disk via UnloadScrap().
• Macintosh Easy Open 1.0.3
>> Sometimes all translation possibilities were not displayed in the translation dialog when there were some translation extensions installed which could translate between many formats. The problem has been fixed.
>> Document converter intermittent failure to highlight when drag and dropping has been fixed
>> Translation failure under certain relatively-low memory conditions has been fixed
>> A bug where Standard File’s sfType was incorrectly set after translation has been fixed
>> Cleaned up memory leak when disposing of progress dialog
>> Document converter 64 translation path limitation removed. Maximum now 256.
>> Scrap translation path expansion failure fixed
>> No longer disposing of non-heap memory in Standard File
>> Don’t display AppleSearch in MEO’s dialogs
>> Shutdown (gracefully) support for Finder 7.0 and Finder 7.1 on Macintosh 660AV and Macintosh 840AV models
>> Fix problem where creator of document and signature of application match, but MEO wouldn’t let the application open the document anyway.
• Macintosh Easy Open 1.0.2
>> Support for System 7.1J.
>> Support for future Apple CPU’s and software.
>> Scrap translation has been made more robust.
>> Rebuilding of RAM disk desktops has been fixed.
>> Document converters now highlight if the document’s format or OSType match (in Macintosh Easy Open 1.0.1 it would only highlight if the format matched).
>> When choosing a translation path, Macintosh Easy Open now tries to choose a path with a matching creator. When displaying paths in a document opener, Macintosh Easy Open now displays all the different paths to a single format (as long as the creators are different).
>> The hint fields (in scrap translation) passed to DoTranslateScrap() were reversed in Macintosh Easy Open 1.0.1 (the destination hint was in the source hint and vise versa). This has been fixed. A new gestalt selector has been added to Translation.h, Translation.p, and Translation.a. If the bit is set, then the hints are in the correct position. If the bit is unset, then the hints are reversed (Macintosh
